Eat Well - Passionfruit Habanero Salsa
Baja is a well-wanderer’s dream destination. Located on the west coast of Mexico the state of Baja California Sur is relatively quiet compared to other regions of Mexico (with Cabo being an obvious exception), making it the perfect spot for a chill vacation. While the night life & beaches are relatively quiet here the tacos are undoubtedly picante & each taco we’ve encountered over the past week seems to come with it’s own unique salsa picante (aka hot sauce); our favourite Mexican ‘heath food’.
Hot sauce, a health food? Now, hear us out .. this may sound counter-intuitive, but the capsaicin in peppers actually acts as an anti-irritant to the gut to calm an upset stomach & reduce digestive issues that can commonly arise from all those burritos + refried beans. It also has naturally occurring antimicrobial properties to potentially help prevent traveller’s tummy. A delicious win, win!
This passionfruit habanero hot sauce is inspired by a salsa we’ve been enjoying smothered all over those famous Baja fish tacos at our favourite beachside restaurant. It’s super acidic, slightly sweet & muy muy picante thanks to a couple of fresh habaneros. Throw everything into a blender and enjoy on our healthified DIY Baja fish taco recipe.
Ingredients
4 small habaneros
6 medium passion fruit
1 tbs apple cider vinegar
juice of 2 limes
4 medium cloves of garlic
salt, to taste
Instructions
Coarsely chop the pepper + garlic and scoop out the juicy inside bits of the passion fruit (seeds included), toss the skin. Add everything to a blender and blend on high for 30 - 60 seconds until smooth and creamy. Stays in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks (but it won’t last that long, we promise).
